Stay Motivated with your goals in 2025
We are already more than halfway through the month of January! Wow, time sure does soar by. Many of us do this silly little thing and set some goals or intentions we’d like to commit to for the new year. From shedding a few pounds to reading more books, we’ve all got some changes we want to make in our lives for enrichment in some aspect. Unfortunately, according to Google AI
Around 80% of people give up on their New Year’s resolutions by February.
Yikes, talk about a buzzkill. 80% is a overwhelming majority of people! Why do so many plans fall through? Is it a lack of motivation, improper planning, no accountability partners, a mixture of all 3? Whatever the reason, 20% of people defy the odds!
Around 80% of people give up on their New Year’s resolutions by February.
20% of people follow through on their goals and intentions!
This blog post is for the 20% of you who may be experiencing one of the many lulls that inevitably come up when chasing after your goals! Here are 3 tips that ground and motivate me to keep chunking away at my goals year round!
Break it down π₯π¨
Rome wasn’t built in a day, your goals, no matter how big or small will take time and planning over an extended period and that’s OKAY. Breaking down your goals into small bite-sized chunks will increase the probability of you sticking to it significantly.
For example: If one of my goals for the year was to eat healthier and making better food decisions I would
NOT
- Overhaul my entire panty and make a huge drastic change to purge everything deemed unhealthy or out of alignment with my goals out
PERHAPS
- Start with snacks. I’d identify snacks I love and enjoy already and slowly try to find healthier alternatives to that single category. Once done, I’d move on to the next category of food.
Micro-goals are the way to go, they’ll keep you motivated, inspired and not overwhelmed which is the key to consistency!
create a flexible routine π€ΈββοΈ
When you wake up, what’s one of the first actions you take? Are you:
- Scrolling through your social media apps (rip tik tok)
- Going though a morning stretch series
- Brushing your teeth
Whatever your personal morning routine is, I’d imagine you engage in your activities in an almost autopilot-like state. Your routine is so unique and personal to you that you no longer have to think about it. I wake up, I shower, I brush my teeth, etc. When you have a goal you’d like to implement, think of it not as a external one-off activity that is separated from you and your routine. Incorporate into your lifestyle in such a way that it’s just a normal thing you do (nothing out of the ordinary here!)
For example, if you wanted to ramp up some more time at the gym into your life, carve out a moment and save space for that activity in advance. Overtime the activity will just blend into every other thing you need to do throughout the day (just another thing!)
In the past, many of my goals fell through because I’d treat the goal like it was this HUGE MONUMENTAL thing I had to do and overcome. Overtime, that becomes mentally taxing and eventually the entire goal altogether fizzled out completely. When my mindset shifted to just seamlessly incorporating the goal into my life in a mundane fashion, it was much easier for me to make a habit out of it!
celebrate the little things ππ
You work hard, you deserve to celebrate your efforts! No matter how big of small the achievement, if anyone is going to acknowledge and praise your work it’s YOU! Celebrating your wins is an opportunity for reflection and motivation, while you’re joyfully looking back on the work you put in to achieve your goals moment of refinement emerges. What was effective, what wasn’t? What tweaks to your approach would you change moving forward?
Example: For the get in the gym more goal, I gave myself the challenge of walking on the treadmill for 3 days a week for 30 minute. After 4 weeks, I’d celebrate myself for sticking to the plan in my own unique way (maybe buying a new pair of workout leggings, eating my favorite cupcake, <insert whatever it is that you do to celebrate>)but I’d also do some reflection on tweaks I’d want to incorporate. Do I want to make it 4 days a week? 2 days a week? Do i want to add more workouts after my walk or before? I’d figure out my next steps and build them into the habit I’m already establishing. Overtime your goal will evolve and become unique to you!
